Join SEA naturalists Juliet Malik and Ren Redlich along with guest naturalist Ross Schaefer on April 26 for a fun community activity in which we will contribute to the documentation of our region’s amazing biodiversity. \nWhat: \nThe City Nature Challenge is an annual four-day international bioblitz that invites people around the world to document wildlife in their region. The event is organized globally by the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County and the California Academy of Sciences\, with local partners leading efforts in their communities. This is Shasta County’s second year participating and is co-organized by Point Blue Conservation Science\, Western Shasta Resource Conservation District\, and Shasta Environmental Alliance. \nWhy: \nParticipating in CNC events provides valuable data that helps scientists and communities better understand and protect nature globally. Plus\, it is a fun activity that provides the opportunity for community connection and learning about local biodiversity. \nHow: \nWe will be conducting an iNaturalist bioblitz\, a community science activity in which participants document as many species as possible within a specified location and time frame. Observations are made and submitted by using the user-friendly app and platform iNaturalist. \nWho: \nAnyone! All that is needed is a mobile phone with the iNaturalist app downloaded onto it.  \nTo Participate: \n\n       Sign up HERE\n       Download iNaturalist onto your mobile phone and create an account.\n       Familiarize yourself with how iNaturalist works. Check out this page for tutorials.\n       Bring your hiking essentials including water\, sun/rain protection\, and a snack.\n\nIf you cannot attend this event\, you can still contribute to the project by submitting iNaturalist observations within Shasta County during April 24-27\, 2026. Your observations will automatically be recorded in the Shasta County 2026 CNC project. For any questions email juliet@ecoshasta.org.

SUMMARY:Moth Party ~ Lightsheeting Event
DESCRIPTION:Date: April 24\, 2026 \nTime: 9pm – 11pm \nRSVP HERE \nYou’re invited to the Moth Party! What is a moth party? Well\, if you shine a bright light at a white sheet… this is heaven for moths and other insects. This strategy makes it easier for us to photograph creatures that are usually fluttering about\, making for blurry pictures. \nOur Goal: \nAttract and photograph moths and other insect species to record for the Shasta County City Nature Challenge. \nWhat is the City Nature Challenge? \nEach year\, various counties and cities participate in recording observations of wildlife in the iNaturalist app in order to document biodiversity in specific areas. This is a world-wide project that encourages the average person to look at nature around them and report back on what they see. Do you need to be a scientist or an expert to take part in this Challenge? Absolutely not! All you need is a phone\, the iNaturalist app\, and curiosity. \nWhy a Moth Party? \nWhen you think of “Pollinators” you probably picture colorful butterflies or buzzing bees. But did you know that on a global scale\, there are twice as many species of pollinating moths as there are bees\, and six times as many pollinating moth species as butterflies? While most creatures are asleep\, moths work the night-shift\, which is why they are often overlooked. If this didn’t convince you\, they are also very cute and fuzzy and nice to look at!  \nPlease RSVP for location and event details \n*Note: this event will be held in a more remote location than the light-polluted city center in order to encourage a more successful turnout (of insects) \nFor any questions\, contact ren@ecoshasta.org \n

SUMMARY:Free for All ~ Thing Swap
DESCRIPTION:Join the Shasta Environmental Alliance and the Western Shasta Resource Conservation District for a lively “Free for All ~ Thing Swap”—a morning of sharing\, treasure‑hunting\, and community connection. Bring gently used items you no longer need\, set them out for others to enjoy\, and browse the tables to see what useful or delightful things you might take home. \nThing swaps are a simple\, joyful way to care for our ecosystem by reducing consumption\, extending the life of everyday items\, and keeping usable goods out of the landfill. They also strengthen community ties—every shared object becomes a small act of generosity that helps neighbors meet neighbors. \nEvent Details \nYou may place your giveaway items on the tables provided or bring your own. Please label any personal tables as “not part of swap” so they return to their owners at the end of the event. \nParticipants are responsible for removing any unclaimed items they brought. Event organizers cannot provide disposal or cleanup services. \nAfter you’ve finished setting out and collecting items\, stay to enjoy informal community activities—games\, raffles\, and opportunities to connect with others who care about reducing waste and building a resilient local community. \nPlease\, no pets except service dogs on a leash.\n \n**Parking is limited near the WSRCD building\, so carpooling is encouraged.** \nPrepare for the Event \n\nClean out your garage\, shed\, and closets. Look for items you haven’t used in a year\, things that feel like clutter\, or items someone else could put to good use. Unused seed packets\, extra garden tools\, plastic pots\, bikes\, skates\, camping gear\, kitchen items\, books\, art supplies—almost anything can find a new home.\nPack your items for easy transport. Bring boxes or bags you can carry from the unloading area to the tables\, which may be a few hundred feet away.\nLabel items that are not part of the swap. Mark tarps\, tables\, boxes\, or other containers you plan to take home.\nBring a bag or box for treasures you collect. SUMMARY:Families in the Forest
DESCRIPTION:Join SEA volunteers Holly White-Wolfe and Juliet Malik—California Naturalists —for a special educational outing designed for families with young children. The event is designed for children\, their siblings\, parents\, grandparents or other caregivers to enjoy together.  \nWe’ll explore the benefits of time in nature by stimulating our senses with sights\, sounds\, scents\, and other soothing qualities of the natural world. Studies suggest that just two hours per week in nature is linked to better health and well-being (Weir\, 2020). Nature can help reduce stress\, improve mental clarity\, and boost overall well-being (Grinde and Patil\, 2009).   \nWe’ll take a break for story time on our picnic blankets. Our special guest\, a local gnome\, will share how to identify local mountains\, waters\, and plants. He’ll guide us through how we can start to notice more together. \nCome along with us while we build a sense of belonging to a community that cares for its ecosystem. \nEvent Details: \nPlease no dogs except service dogs on a leash–this helps us better observe living creatures. \nWalking will be on mostly flat surfaces in easy-to-hike terrain. Surfaces may be uneven\, so hiking boots or closed-toe walking shoes are recommended.  \nEvent will be cancelled in the event of a storm.  \nPrepare for the event: \n\nREQUIRED: Register for the event and sign the waiver form here. (Children must be accompanied by an adult. A registration form is needed for each adult and child.)\nPlease bring a picnic blanket\, water\, and a snack.\nWear layers of clothing\, a hat\, and walking shoes (close-toed).\n\nLearn more about the benefits of “forest bathing” (intentionally spending time in nature) here.   \nAny questions? SUMMARY:Wildfire: Friend or Foe?
DESCRIPTION:Shasta Environmental Alliance invites you to a free presentation about California’s relationship to fire on November 24\, 2025. Kalyn Nash from Western Shasta Resource Conservation District will take us on a journey through California’s historic fire regimes\, the ecological need for fire\, and the ways in which humans impact these fire regimes. The second part of the presentation will be covered by members from Native Roots Network to teach us about the Indigenous relationship to fire and the cultural and ecological significance of Native burning practices. The discussion will wrap up with home hardening suggestions and the opportunity to ask questions. We hope you will join us in this opportunity to have a deeper understanding of living with wildfire. \nAn RSVP on Facebook or Meetup is preferred but not required to attend. \nFor any questions contact juliet@ecoshasta.org \n  \n

SUMMARY:Families in the Forest
DESCRIPTION:Local gnome and nature guide.\nJoin SEA volunteers Holly White-Wolfe and Juliet Malik—California Naturalists —for a special educational outing designed for families with young children. The event is designed for children\, their siblings\, parents\, grandparents or other caregivers to enjoy together.  \nWe’ll explore the benefits of time in nature by stimulating our senses with sights\, sounds\, scents\, and other soothing qualities of the natural world. Studies suggest that just two hours per week in nature is linked to better health and well-being. Nature can help reduce stress\, improve mental clarity\, and boost overall well-being. SUMMARY:Celebrate California Biodiversity Days at Whiskeytown National Recreation Area
DESCRIPTION:Shasta Environmental Alliance is pleased to host its 3rd annual BioBlitz event to celebrate California Biodiversity Days. Join SEA Board Member Juliet Malik and fellow California Naturalist Holly White-Wolfe at Whiskeytown for a day observing and documenting the many plants\, fungi\, animals\, and insects that call this national recreation area home via an iNaturalist BioBlitz. \nWe welcome people of all ages to come out and help us reach a goal of finding at least 30 species in honor of California’s 30×30 initiative to conserve 30% of California lands and coastal waters by 2030 through collaborative action. Have fun learning how to identify the life around you while helping to steward and protect California biodiversity!  \nBy joining this challenge you are participating in citizen science\, and observations you make in our region will be counted towards a state-wide goal of mapping at least 30 species. Your observations are applied to understand biodiversity\, track its changes over time\, and direct conservation actions.  \nExpect to walk at least 2 miles. Wear hiking shoes\, a hat\, and sunscreen\, and bring plenty of water and a lunch for after. The trail is rated as moderate\, has a steady incline and the terrain is uneven. We will return to the picnic area near the trailhead by 11:30 for a lunch break and group discussion of what we observed and were able to identify.  \nPlease no dogs except service dogs on a leash–this helps us better observe living creatures. \nPrepare for the event: \n\nREQUIRED: Register for the event and sign the waiver form here. (Children under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult.)\nDownload the app on your phone and click “Join” to sign up for free. Start here\nFamiliarize yourself with how it works. Check out this page for tutorials.\nJoin the  CA Biodiversity Week Challenge 2025 so that all your observations will be included in the project.\nWe’ll submit nature observations during our event and discuss how to upload them later.\nOptional: a camera with a telephoto lens for capturing birds\n\nLearn more about California Biodiversity Week events here.  \nAny questions? SUMMARY:Nature Journaling at Manzanita Lake
DESCRIPTION:This month Shasta Environmental Alliance’s hike leader\, Juliet Malik\, is excited to partner with Heather Bortolussi from Western Shasta Resource Conservation District to offer a relaxing and restorative practice for connecting with nature. Heather is the GrizzlyCorps fellow serving with the RCD who is excited to share with you the wonders of nature journaling and its necessity in the face of a rapidly changing world. \nJoin Juliet and Heather on July 20th as they head up to Manzanita Lake in Lassen Volcanic National Park to explore nature journaling and its many benefits amidst the yellow pine forest near the lake’s edge. This activity is open to everybody young and old (children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult) and requires no previous drawing experience. It is recommended to bring a pencil and a sketchbook\, but you are welcome to bring any other art supplies you enjoy using. Heather will provide an assortment of materials as well\, for all to share. \nThis activity is all about slowing down and checking in with ourselves\, with nature and hopefully with each other. When we slow down we can begin to let go of the angst often present in our daily lives and behold the beauty and wonder all around us. Other activities may include a short walk\, sniffing the Jeffrey pines for their delicious vanilla/butterscotch scent\, and zine making. Bring a lunch\, water\, hat and sunscreen\, but most importantly bring your curiosity!  \nPlease note that there is an entrance fee at LVNP of $30 per vehicle\, unless you have an annual pass. We encourage those with passes to carpool with those who don’t to keep this activity accessible for all.  \nTo register for this event and get on our contact list for updates\, carpooling information and further details please fill out this form and agree to the waiver. \nFor any questions contact juliet@ecoshasta.org
