SUMMARY:Echo Lake Hike (Lassen Volcanic National Park)
DESCRIPTION:Echo Lake Hike (Lassen Volcanic National Park) \nSaturday\, July 13\, 2024\, 8 am \nThis is a 4 to 4.5-mile out-and-back hike to Echo Lake\, following a heavily forested trail with open areas to a small lake. Wear boots and bring a hat\, water\, sunscreen and lunch. We will meet at the Mt. Shasta Mall parking lot near Chase Bank at 8 am and carpool/caravan to Lassen. DESCRIPTION:Cold Boiling Lake and Flowing Meadows (Lassen Volcanic National Park) \nMonday\, July 8\, 2024\, 8 am \nMeet at the Chase Bank in the Mt. Shasta Mall Parking lot \n\nTo escape the heat of the valley\, we will head up to much cooler weather in Lassen Volcanic National Park for this joint CNPS/SEA wildflower walk. This four-mile easy to moderate hike with little elevation gain (the only hard part is the altitude) will start in the Kings Creek Picnic area and go 1.4 miles to Cold Boiling Lake and from here we will walk another ½ mile up the wildflower-filled beautiful flowing meadows on the trail to Bumpass Hell. Temperatures will be up to 30 degrees or more cooler than Redding. Trees on much of the trail have burned\, but this leaves more room for wildflowers. \n  \nWear boots and bring a hat\, water\, sunscreen and lunch. We will meet at the Mt. Shasta Mall parking lot near Chase Bank at 8 am and carpool/caravan to Lassen. Please sign up on Meetup.com here  For more information\, contact David Ledger at david@ecoshasta.org

SUMMARY:RESCHEDULED: Phillips Brothers Mill Tour (paid event - advanced sign up required)
DESCRIPTION:NEW DATE (rescheduled from May 4th cancellation)\nPhillips Brothers Mill Tour\nSaturday\, May 25th at 8 am\nMeet at the Mt. Shasta Mall Parking lot\n$25 per person\n\n\n\nThis will be a field trip to the historic Phillips Brothers Mill\, a steam-powered sawmill and box factory operated off the grid that is on the National Register of Historic Places. The mill operated by the Hendrix Family was assembled from various steam mills in the area and has been a working mill since 1897. They even have a 1906 huge steam-operated tractor\, all located on 1000 acres of forested land that has a conservation easement on it and is only selectively cut. One of the family members will give us a tour of the mill\, the steam-operated boilers that power the plant. Even the family homestead is on solar power. Everything is off the grid including the well.\n\n\n\nThis will be a fascinating tour from the mill pond through the first cuts of the logs\, to the finished products\, either custom-cut wood or wooden boxes. With enough time we will stop on the way back to look at some trees infected with bark beetles that will soon be cut for lumber. Due to safety concerns\, the mill will not be operating during the tour.\n\n\n\nYou must sign up on our Meetup site (https://www.meetup.com/shasta…/events/300174252/) and sign a waiver unless you already have for 2024. Children must be over 12 years old\, and a parent must sign a waiver for them. This tour is limited to 24 people and costs $25 per person.\n\n\n\nFor more information contact david@ecoshasta.org. We will meet at the Mt. Shasta Mall near Chase Bank and carpool and caravan to the mill. Make sure you pre-register!

SUMMARY:Historic Horsetown Photo (Horsetown-Clear Creek Preserve)
DESCRIPTION:May 18 (Sat.) 10:00 A.M. – “HISTORIC HORSETOWN PHOTO” \n“In 1849\, a group of hopeful prospectors arrived at the site of Reading’s Bar on Clear Creek\, and by 1850 the census identified 1\,000 inhabitants of what became One Horse Town (Horsetown). For many years HCCP has hoped to locate an historical photograph of the town – we even advertised a reward if someone could find one! \nAnd now we have one\, thanks to Joe Molter with the assistance of Trudy Vaughan and Shasta Historical Society. Trudy will expand on Cathy Scott’s earlier talk this Spring on the history of the area and also discuss some historic archaeological work conducted here at HCCP; and Joe will tell the story of the discovery of this photo\, have copies of the photo\, and lead a short gentle walk to its original site to orient you to today’s landscape. Meet at the HCCP Amphitheatre at 10am. \nSee our website at HorsetownClearCreekPreserve.org for a trail map and coming events. Contact Horsetownhccp@gmail.com for more information”

SUMMARY:Hornbeck Trail Walk with BLM Ecologist
DESCRIPTION:Hornbeck Trail Walk with BLM Ecologist\nSaturday\, May 11th\, 2024 at 9am \nSEA has organized a field trip to be led by BLM Ecologist Brooke Thompson on the Hornbeck Trail north of Redding to talk about the proposed fire treatment planned for the area. Brooke will explain the ecology of the area\, how it has been affected by fire suppression\, and alternatives in preserving the area and making it safer from catastrophic fire. The vegetation was also adversely affected by pollutants from the copper smelters that were operating in the late 1800s and early 20th century near where Shasta Dam is now located. \nWe will also identify native plants and non-native plants on this field trip. Brooke also wants to hear input from you\, the public\, about their alternatives. This trail is in a mixed oak woodland and chaparral habitat. \nBrooke has led several field trips for SEA before and has a passion for the natural world and always leads an informative walk. This will be a fairly easy walk of 2 to 3 miles and will take about 2 hours. Meet at the trailhead which is under the powerlines on Quartz Hill Road between Lake Blvd. and Keswick Dam Road. Please sign up on our Meetup page and sign the waiver if you haven’t already. \nFor more information contact David Ledger at david@ecoshasta.org. For those wishing\, after the field trip we will take a short drive to the Quartz Hill Mine.

SUMMARY:Lillian Nelson Nature Preserve Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:Lillian Nelson Nature Preserve Field Trip \nFriday\, May 10th at 8:30am \nRead directions below for meetup location! \n  \nPlease join us for a visit to Lillian Nelson Nature Preserve\, a privately owned 30-acre conservation easement managed by Shasta Land Trust. The Western Shasta RCD in partnership with Point Blue Conservation Science is currently implementing grant-funded restoration work. \n  \nProjects include invasive red sesbania removal from Boulder creek\, a small meadow restoration\, forest health and fuel reduction\, acorn planting\, brush pile habitat piles\, bird box installation and outdoor classroom maintenance. There will also be an opportunity to see beaver activity! \n  \nThe meeting place is on College View just below the hill going up to Bethel Church. We will have a cone that says “SEA” on it to make it clear where to turn! The property borders Bethel on the East. There is a Bethel gravel parking lot and a yellow COR easement gate for the meeting place. Parking is allowed in the Bethel gravel parking lot. The road is bumpy and rutted so vehicle clearance could be an issue. It is a short walk from the Bethel parking lot. There is no address for that location. Carpooling is recommended. The Hearth on Churn creek is the nearest familiar easily located business if a more simple meeting place is required. \n  \nPlease sign up on our Meetup site and fill out a 2024 liability waiver if you’ve not done so already! SUMMARY:Hog Lake Plateau Field Trip (SEA + CNPS)
DESCRIPTION:Hog Lake Plateau\, Sacramento River Bend Recreation Area\nSunday\, April 21 \n \nHog Lake Plateau is one of the best places in the North State to be wowed by amazing arrays of spring wildflowers\, as well as many bird species. We will visit Hog Lake itself—in fact a very large vernal pool—and at least one other smaller pool in the blue oak woodlands above. This field trip is a follow-up to the CNPS April 18th Chapter meeting presentation by Greg Lockett\, Hog Lake and Environs\, in which he shares his gorgeous photography of this beautiful area and its botanical denizens. \nBe prepared for ~2 miles of mostly\, if not entirely\, off-trail walking in very rocky and very possibly muddy conditions. Hiking poles may come in handy! Wear appropriate footwear\, and bring water and lunch or snacks. Make sure you have signed both waivers for 2024 (see opening paragraph). For light rain\, bring an umbrella; heavy rain cancels. Dogs OK on leash if you pick up after them. Please RSVP to Shasta Chapter CNPS at shastacnps@gmail.com for time and location details.

SUMMARY:Trail 58 Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:Trail 58 Field Trip \nIron Mt. Road\, Keswick \nSaturday\, February 24\, 9:30 am \n  \nThis is a trail on BLM land just west of Redding that follows the south side of Middle Creek to Old Shasta in a former oak woodland\, now recovering from the Carr Fire. This is a fairly level trail that follows an old water ditch from the gold mining era for much of the way with a footbridge across a small creek in a ravine. We will catch early-blooming wildflowers and identify many of the trees and shrubs along the trail. This is a 3 ½ mile easy hike with a steep and rocky section near the end requiring some agility and balance. \n  \nThis will be a fun trail with lots to see\, but unfortunately\, many of the trees were burned in the fire. This opens up greater vistas of the canyon and hillsides. If you want to participate\, make sure you sign up on Meetup.org here and make sure you sign the waiver once for all field trips in 2024. This is a Leave No Trace field trip\, carry out what you bring in\, and do not collect plants\, mushrooms\, etc. on our public lands. Dogs on leash okay but bring a poop bag. We will meet at the trailhead off Highway 299 on Iron Mt. Road. Limited to 20 people who have signed up on Meetup. For more information contact walk leader David Ledger at david@ecoshasta.

SUMMARY:Audubon Conservation Ranching Program event (hosted by Shasta Birding Society)
DESCRIPTION:Audubon Conservation Ranching Program \nFebruary 14 at 7:00 pm \nShasta Birding Society invites members of the Shasta Environmental Alliance and the Shasta Chapter of the California Native Plant Society to join us in a Zoom meeting https://us06web.zoom.us/j/87589708925 on Wednesday evening\, February 14\, at 7:00 pm. \nMatt Allshouse of Audubon California will present a program on the Conservation Ranching Program\, the goal of which is to halt the conversion of grassland ecosystems and improve the ecological functions of rangelands by partnering with ranchers. \nProgram Description:\nCalifornia has roughly 40 million acres of rangelands that provide food production\, carbon sequestration\, water infiltration\, and habitat for a wide range of species. However\, this historic land use is under threat with an average of 20\,000 acres a year being lost to development or crop conversion. Climate change\, invasive species\, aquifer depletion\, and outdated grazing practices also degrade large portions of grasslands\, increasing economic and ecological vulnerability. This in turn has contributed to steep declines in grassland bird species across California and the United States. \nAudubon launched its Conservation Ranching program (ACR) here in California in 2019. This program is designed to stem the conversion of grassland ecosystems and improve the ecological functions of rangelands by partnering with ranchers to transition to more regenerative grazing approaches via a ranch certification program. This presentation will highlight the ACR program components which includes the development of ranch-specific Habitat Management Plans and a third-party certified set of regenerative grazing practices to increase climate-driven drought resiliency\, rebuild soil organic matter\, enhance plant diversity\nand cover\, increase water infiltration and carbon sequestration\, and increase overall biodiversity. This ecological resilience can translate to economic resilience\, as participating producers are able to use the Audubon certification logo on their product – providing a market incentive to landowners to enroll in this program through increased sales or revenue. This presentation will highlight program practices\, early results and opportunities for enrollment. \nMatt Allshouse came to Audubon California from Wyoming and has been the Conservation Ranching Program Manager for the state since September 2019. As a rangeland ecologist\, he has 15 years of experience associated with land policy\, management\, and science. Previously\, Matt served as Ranch Manager for Antelope Springs Land and Cattle in Wyoming\, as a Biologist for the Peregrine Fund in Belize and Guatemala directing conservation field research\, and as Ecologist with the consulting firm Trihydro Corporation focusing on restoration ecology. Matt holds a dual bachelor’s degree in Environment and Natural Resources\, and Rangeland Ecology and Watershed Management from University of Wyoming.

SUMMARY:Bark Beetles: An Interesting Part of Our Local Forest Ecology
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this free\, public talk on Tuesday\, February 13th from 6 pm – 7:30 pm for a presentation by Dr. Donald R. Owen at the Redding Public Library Community Room \nDon will start his talk with an overview of native bark beetles and their impacts\, including their response to climate change. He also will explore the concept of “pest” using bark beetles and some lesser-known forest insects as examples. Finally\, he will talk about some local insects with fascinating life histories – insects that can be observed simply by stepping outside and being observant. \n  \nDon is a retired Forest Entomologist with degrees from Penn State and UC Berkeley. At the start of his career\, he worked for the USDA Forest Service in New Mexico\, Alaska\, and California. In 1991 he switched permanently to the CA Dept. of Forestry and Fire Protection\, where he served as Forest Heath Specialist and the Department’s lead on forest insects. He has a broad background in forest insects and diseases\, both native and invasive\, and their impact on forest ecosystems. \n  \nHe enjoys exploring the lives of insects through photography. His photographs appear on the FORESTRY IMAGES website and have been featured in publications of the Entomological Society of America. \n  \n**Related to this talk\, SEA will be organizing a field trip in late April to the Phillips Brothers Mill\, established in 1897 and the only steam powered lumber mill in the United States still operating. The 1000-acre forest surrounding it is under a conservation easement and supplies much of the lumber for the mill\, bark beetles or not. The last tour SEA led in 2019 was sold out at $25 a ticket. If you come to this Bark Beetle talk you will have the first chance to sign up for this over 120-year-old mill tour. Please sign up at the Bark Beetle meeting!
