Bring gently used items you no longer need\, set them out for others to enjoy\, and browse the tables to see what useful or delightful things you might take home. \nThing swaps are a simple\, joyful way to care for our ecosystem by reducing consumption\, extending the life of everyday items\, and keeping usable goods out of the landfill. They also strengthen community ties—every shared object becomes a small act of generosity that helps neighbors meet neighbors. \nEvent Details \nYou may place your giveaway items on the tables provided or bring your own. Please label any personal tables as “not part of swap” so they return to their owners at the end of the event. \nParticipants are responsible for removing any unclaimed items they brought. DESCRIPTION:Join SEA volunteers Holly White-Wolfe and Juliet Malik—California Naturalists —for a special educational outing designed for families with young children. The event is designed for children\, their siblings\, parents\, grandparents or other caregivers to enjoy together.  \nWe’ll explore the benefits of time in nature by stimulating our senses with sights\, sounds\, scents\, and other soothing qualities of the natural world. Studies suggest that just two hours per week in nature is linked to better health and well-being (Weir\, 2020). Nature can help reduce stress\, improve mental clarity\, and boost overall well-being (Grinde and Patil\, 2009).   \nWe’ll take a break for story time on our picnic blankets. Our special guest\, a local gnome\, will share how to identify local mountains\, waters\, and plants. He’ll guide us through how we can start to notice more together. \nCome along with us while we build a sense of belonging to a community that cares for its ecosystem. \nEvent Details: \nPlease no dogs except service dogs on a leash–this helps us better observe living creatures. \nWalking will be on mostly flat surfaces in easy-to-hike terrain. Join California Naturalist Juliet Malik for a walk along the Upper Salt Creek Trail to observe and identify flowering plants. Kalyn Nash from Western Shasta Resource Conservation District will take us on a journey through California’s historic fire regimes\, the ecological need for fire\, and the ways in which humans impact these fire regimes. The second part of the presentation will be covered by members from Native Roots Network to teach us about the Indigenous relationship to fire and the cultural and ecological significance of Native burning practices. The discussion will wrap up with home hardening suggestions and the opportunity to ask questions. SUMMARY:Celebrate California Biodiversity Days at Whiskeytown National Recreation Area
DESCRIPTION:Shasta Environmental Alliance is pleased to host its 3rd annual BioBlitz event to celebrate California Biodiversity Days. Join SEA Board Member Juliet Malik and fellow California Naturalist Holly White-Wolfe at Whiskeytown for a day observing and documenting the many plants\, fungi\, animals\, and insects that call this national recreation area home via an iNaturalist BioBlitz. \nWe welcome people of all ages to come out and help us reach a goal of finding at least 30 species in honor of California’s 30×30 initiative to conserve 30% of California lands and coastal waters by 2030 through collaborative action. Have fun learning how to identify the life around you while helping to steward and protect California biodiversity!  \nBy joining this challenge you are participating in citizen science\, and observations you make in our region will be counted towards a state-wide goal of mapping at least 30 species. Your observations are applied to understand biodiversity\, track its changes over time\, and direct conservation actions.  \nExpect to walk at least 2 miles. Wear hiking shoes\, a hat\, and sunscreen\, and bring plenty of water and a lunch for after. The trail is rated as moderate\, has a steady incline and the terrain is uneven. SUMMARY:Nature Journaling at Manzanita Lake
DESCRIPTION:This month Shasta Environmental Alliance’s hike leader\, Juliet Malik\, is excited to partner with Heather Bortolussi from Western Shasta Resource Conservation District to offer a relaxing and restorative practice for connecting with nature. Heather is the GrizzlyCorps fellow serving with the RCD who is excited to share with you the wonders of nature journaling and its necessity in the face of a rapidly changing world. \nJoin Juliet and Heather on July 20th as they head up to Manzanita Lake in Lassen Volcanic National Park to explore nature journaling and its many benefits amidst the yellow pine forest near the lake’s edge. This activity is open to everybody young and old (children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult) and requires no previous drawing experience. It is recommended to bring a pencil and a sketchbook\, but you are welcome to bring any other art supplies you enjoy using. Heather will provide an assortment of materials as well\, for all to share. \nThis activity is all about slowing down and checking in with ourselves\, with nature and hopefully with each other. When we slow down we can begin to let go of the angst often present in our daily lives and behold the beauty and wonder all around us. Other activities may include a short walk\, sniffing the Jeffrey pines for their delicious vanilla/butterscotch scent\, and zine making. Bring a lunch\, water\, hat and sunscreen\, but most importantly bring your curiosity!  \nPlease note that there is an entrance fee at LVNP of $30 per vehicle\, unless you have an annual pass. SUMMARY:Spring Hill Trail Field Trip (Mt. Shasta)
DESCRIPTION:Come join SEA hike leader Juliet Malik to get out of the valley heat and head up to Mt. Shasta for some cooler mountain air! The moderately difficult Spring Hill Trail is an out and back route totaling about 3.25 miles with an elevation gain of 650 feet from the trailhead to the top. It winds through a mixed conifer forest and hosts several stopping points with fantastic views of the mountain and surrounding area. We’ll be on the lookout for blooming plants and anything else that sparks our curiosity. Pack a lunch\, plenty of water\, sunscreen\, and hiking poles if you use them. DESCRIPTION:Summer heat is coming for us so let’s take a shady morning walk to discover and discuss the numerous and wondrous ways our beautiful oak trees contribute to a rich tapestry of life. From the water-loving valley oaks to the heat-loving blue oaks\, these woodlands support more living organisms than any other terrestrial ecosystem in California. Shasta Environmental Alliance’s hike leader and naturalist\, Juliet Malik will guide you on this walk to observe and discuss both plant and animal residents of the oak community. From the raucous acorn woodpecker and impertinent California ground squirrel to the ubiquitous manzanita and poison oak\, there is no shortage of “did you know” facts Juliet can throw at you! \nThis is a flat 1.3-mile loop trail located in Redding and features ample shade (thank you oaks!!). Dogs on a leash are allowed. We will get started at 8am to avoid the heat\, but please bring water to stay hydrated. DESCRIPTION:Sloppy Joe Hike: Spring Edition!  \nSunday\, April 13\, 2025\, 9 am – Noon \nJoin SEA hike leader Juliet Malik for a spring hike on one of Redding’s newest trails. We will walk a different route than the one we took on the November trip and explore the bounty of spring green and blooms along the seasonal creek before winding our way up the ridge through the oak woodland to note emerging understory wildflowers. Along with spring plant growth comes of course\, all the wildlife that depend on it! We will keep our eyes and ears open for the many birds\, butterflies\, bees\, frogs\, and other critters inhabiting this beautiful place.  \nThis trip will cover about 3 to 3.5 miles round trip and take about 2-3 hours. Stream crossings now have sturdy bridges\, but if there has been recent rainfall\, the trail may truly be “sloppy\,” so wear appropriate shoes. Some sections are steep\, rocky\, and uneven\, so good balance is required\, and poles are always a good idea. DESCRIPTION:Bailey Cove Loop Trail \nShasta Lake \nSaturday\, March 8\, 9 am \n  \nThis will be a beautiful and educational 3-mile walk around a small peninsula that juts out into Shasta Lake with a great variety of plants and different habitats on the loop trail.  \n  \nIt starts out in a mixed conifer forest\, blends into a chaparral\, and finishes up in a canyon live oak woodland. For this field trip\, we will discuss the different slopes and aspects of the trail and how they affect the vegetation. We will also see ferns and discuss their various physical features\, reproduction\, and where they are in the Tree of Life. This trail is easy for most hikers with a few rough spots. With the warmer weather\, plants should be starting to break out in bloom. Dogs are okay if you bring cleanup bags/carry it out. Along with identifying some of these plants and keeping an eye out for some early spring growth\, we will explore the environmental history of this stretch of land that once held a city-owned gold mine. \nIf we walk the entire length of the trail and back it will be 3.5 miles round trip. DESCRIPTION:Battle Creek Field Trip \nSaturday\, January 11\, 9:30 am \nSign up for trip: https://forms.gle/Q1Kk77vVCS9P6Jmy6 \nFor this field trip we will head to the Coleman Fish Hatchery and then hike up a paved road to the Coleman hydroelectric Powerhouse and then up a hill to the Coleman Forebay. Walk leader David Ledger will explain some of the restoration work being done and planned dam removals on Battle Creek\, an extremely important habitat for salmon and steelhead trout. Two of the dams are no longer functioning but are still impeding fish passage as are some diversion dams and canals. \nThis will be about a three-mile round trip hike to the Coleman Powerhouse and the Coleman Forebay above it. Most of this trip will be walking on a paved service road to these facilities\, part of the walk will be up a fairly steep hill but easy for those in shape. On the way the walk leader will identify some of the early blooming plants as well as trees and shrubs so this outing will be part plant ID and part learning about the important restoration that will be completed. \nThe entire drive and hike will take about 3 hours. Dogs on leashes are okay\, but bring poop bags. DESCRIPTION:NEW YEAR’S DAY FIELD TRIP \nJanuary 1\, 2025\, 9:30 am \nThis is our traditional\, annual SEA/California Native Plant Society New Year’s Day hike up the Westside trail hike every year since 2008 although we may have canceled one year during the peak of the Covid outbreak. \nThis a four-mile out and back hike to “Top of the World” with a 600-foot elevation gain through areas burned by the Carr Fire of which the shrubs have been recovering rapidly. Little will be in bloom\, but we will identify the common trees and shrubs as we make our way up the trail. This is not a difficult trail and is suitable for most people that have decent balance and can walk four miles. We usually have 15 to 25 people on this hike and usually have a toast of wine at the top and often one or two people will bring cookies to share. \nLimited to 25 people. DESCRIPTION:Sloppy Joe Hike (West Redding) \nSunday\, November 17\, 2024 \n9:30am to Noon (approx.) \n  \nCome check out one of Redding’s newest trails with new SEA board member Juliet Malik. We will enter from the Country Heights neighborhood and walk a two-mile loop that goes through both riparian and oak woodland habitats. During this naturalist hike we will identify native plants and keep our eyes and ears open for birds\, bugs\, and other fauna.  The trail is moderately hilly with rocky\, uneven ground so sturdy shoes and good balance are in order. If significant rainfall has occurred\, some shallow creek crossings may be necessary. Bring a snack\, water\, appropriate outerwear\, and binoculars if you want to look for birds. A plant and bird checklist will be provided. \n  \nWe will meet at the end of Sunglow Drive and walk a short distance down Winter Green Court to the trailhead.
