SUMMARY:Cloverdale Loop Nature Hike
DESCRIPTION:Let’s start the new year off right by getting out on the trails to connect to nature and to one another. The Cloverdale Loop Trail is part of BLM’s Clear Creek Greenway’s trail system. It is considered easy for most\, but there are some short steep sections with uneven footing so prepare accordingly. The loop is 1.73 miles and features a short jaunt to a vista point where we can pause to take in the view and if we feel compelled to do so\, share some environmental intentions we have for the coming year. \nPlease come prepared with water\, sun/rain protection\, sturdy footwear\, hiking poles\, snack\, and anything else you like to use to observe nature\, i.e. binoculars\, hand lens\, etc. \nSevere weather cancels. Please fill out this form to sign our waiver and be added to the contact list for updates. \nFor questions\, email juliet@ecoshasta.org.

SUMMARY:Wildfire: Friend or Foe?
DESCRIPTION:Shasta Environmental Alliance invites you to a free presentation about California’s relationship to fire on November 24\, 2025. Kalyn Nash from Western Shasta Resource Conservation District will take us on a journey through California’s historic fire regimes\, the ecological need for fire\, and the ways in which humans impact these fire regimes. The second part of the presentation will be covered by members from Native Roots Network to teach us about the Indigenous relationship to fire and the cultural and ecological significance of Native burning practices. The discussion will wrap up with home hardening suggestions and the opportunity to ask questions. We hope you will join us in this opportunity to have a deeper understanding of living with wildfire. \nAn RSVP on Facebook or Meetup is preferred but not required to attend. \nFor any questions contact juliet@ecoshasta.org \n  \n

SUMMARY:Families in the Forest
DESCRIPTION:Local gnome and nature guide.\nJoin SEA volunteers Holly White-Wolfe and Juliet Malik—California Naturalists —for a special educational outing designed for families with young children. The event is designed for children\, their siblings\, parents\, grandparents or other caregivers to enjoy together.  \nWe’ll explore the benefits of time in nature by stimulating our senses with sights\, sounds\, scents\, and other soothing qualities of the natural world. Studies suggest that just two hours per week in nature is linked to better health and well-being. Nature can help reduce stress\, improve mental clarity\, and boost overall well-being.   \nWe’ll take a break for story time on our picnic blankets. Our special guest\, a local gnome\, will share how to identify local mountains\, waters\, and plants. He’ll guide us through how we can start to notice more together. \nCome along with us while we build a sense of belonging to a community that cares for its ecosystem. \nEvent Details: \nPlease no dogs except service dogs on a leash–this helps us better observe living creatures. \nWalking will be on mostly flat surfaces in easy-to-hike terrain. Surfaces may be uneven\, so hiking boots or closed-toe walking shoes are recommended.  \nPrepare for the event: \n\nREQUIRED: Register for the event and sign the waiver form here. (Children must be accompanied by an adult. A registration form is needed for each adult and child.)\nPlease bring a picnic blanket\, water\, and a snack.\nWear layers of clothing\, a hat\, and walking shoes (close-toed).\n\nLearn more about the benefits of “forest bathing” (intentionally spending time in nature) here.   \nAny questions? SUMMARY:Celebrate California Biodiversity Days at Whiskeytown National Recreation Area
DESCRIPTION:Shasta Environmental Alliance is pleased to host its 3rd annual BioBlitz event to celebrate California Biodiversity Days. Join SEA Board Member Juliet Malik and fellow California Naturalist Holly White-Wolfe at Whiskeytown for a day observing and documenting the many plants\, fungi\, animals\, and insects that call this national recreation area home via an iNaturalist BioBlitz. \nWe welcome people of all ages to come out and help us reach a goal of finding at least 30 species in honor of California’s 30×30 initiative to conserve 30% of California lands and coastal waters by 2030 through collaborative action. Have fun learning how to identify the life around you while helping to steward and protect California biodiversity!  \nBy joining this challenge you are participating in citizen science\, and observations you make in our region will be counted towards a state-wide goal of mapping at least 30 species. Your observations are applied to understand biodiversity\, track its changes over time\, and direct conservation actions.  \nExpect to walk at least 2 miles. Wear hiking shoes\, a hat\, and sunscreen\, and bring plenty of water and a lunch for after. The trail is rated as moderate\, has a steady incline and the terrain is uneven. We will return to the picnic area near the trailhead by 11:30 for a lunch break and group discussion of what we observed and were able to identify.  \nPlease no dogs except service dogs on a leash–this helps us better observe living creatures. \nPrepare for the event: \n\nREQUIRED: Register for the event and sign the waiver form here. (Children under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult.)\nDownload the app on your phone and click “Join” to sign up for free. Start here\nFamiliarize yourself with how it works. Check out this page for tutorials.\nJoin the  CA Biodiversity Week Challenge 2025 so that all your observations will be included in the project.\nWe’ll submit nature observations during our event and discuss how to upload them later.\nOptional: a camera with a telephoto lens for capturing birds\n\nLearn more about California Biodiversity Week events here.  \nAny questions? SUMMARY:Nature Journaling at Manzanita Lake
DESCRIPTION:This month Shasta Environmental Alliance’s hike leader\, Juliet Malik\, is excited to partner with Heather Bortolussi from Western Shasta Resource Conservation District to offer a relaxing and restorative practice for connecting with nature. Heather is the GrizzlyCorps fellow serving with the RCD who is excited to share with you the wonders of nature journaling and its necessity in the face of a rapidly changing world. \nJoin Juliet and Heather on July 20th as they head up to Manzanita Lake in Lassen Volcanic National Park to explore nature journaling and its many benefits amidst the yellow pine forest near the lake’s edge. This activity is open to everybody young and old (children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult) and requires no previous drawing experience. It is recommended to bring a pencil and a sketchbook\, but you are welcome to bring any other art supplies you enjoy using. Heather will provide an assortment of materials as well\, for all to share. \nThis activity is all about slowing down and checking in with ourselves\, with nature and hopefully with each other. When we slow down we can begin to let go of the angst often present in our daily lives and behold the beauty and wonder all around us. Other activities may include a short walk\, sniffing the Jeffrey pines for their delicious vanilla/butterscotch scent\, and zine making. Bring a lunch\, water\, hat and sunscreen\, but most importantly bring your curiosity!  \nPlease note that there is an entrance fee at LVNP of $30 per vehicle\, unless you have an annual pass. We encourage those with passes to carpool with those who don’t to keep this activity accessible for all.  \nTo register for this event and get on our contact list for updates\, carpooling information and further details please fill out this form and agree to the waiver. \nFor any questions contact juliet@ecoshasta.org

SUMMARY:Oak Woodland Meet and Greet (Redding)
DESCRIPTION:Summer heat is coming for us so let’s take a shady morning walk to discover and discuss the numerous and wondrous ways our beautiful oak trees contribute to a rich tapestry of life. From the water-loving valley oaks to the heat-loving blue oaks\, these woodlands support more living organisms than any other terrestrial ecosystem in California. Shasta Environmental Alliance’s hike leader and naturalist\, Juliet Malik will guide you on this walk to observe and discuss both plant and animal residents of the oak community. From the raucous acorn woodpecker and impertinent California ground squirrel to the ubiquitous manzanita and poison oak\, there is no shortage of “did you know” facts Juliet can throw at you! \nThis is a flat 1.3-mile loop trail located in Redding and features ample shade (thank you oaks!!). Dogs on a leash are allowed. We will get started at 8am to avoid the heat\, but please bring water to stay hydrated. The meeting location and subsequent updates will be provided only to those who sign up using this form. \nHave questions? Please contact juliet@ecoshasta.org.

Along with spring plant growth comes of course\, all the wildlife that depend on it! We will keep our eyes and ears open for the many birds\, butterflies\, bees\, frogs\, and other critters inhabiting this beautiful place.  \nThis trip will cover about 3 to 3.5 miles round trip and take about 2-3 hours. Stream crossings now have sturdy bridges\, but if there has been recent rainfall\, the trail may truly be “sloppy\,” so wear appropriate shoes. Some sections are steep\, rocky\, and uneven\, so good balance is required\, and poles are always a good idea. And\, of course\, remember sunscreen and water and a snack if you desire.  \nTo join\, please sign up via THIS FORM so we can contact you if there is a change in plans. The meeting location will be sent once you fill out the form. Contact juliet@ecoshasta.org for any questions.

SUMMARY:Battle Creek Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:Battle Creek Field Trip \nSaturday\, January 11\, 9:30 am \nSign up for trip: https://forms.gle/Q1Kk77vVCS9P6Jmy6 \nFor this field trip we will head to the Coleman Fish Hatchery and then hike up a paved road to the Coleman hydroelectric Powerhouse and then up a hill to the Coleman Forebay. Walk leader David Ledger will explain some of the restoration work being done and planned dam removals on Battle Creek\, an extremely important habitat for salmon and steelhead trout. Two of the dams are no longer functioning but are still impeding fish passage as are some diversion dams and canals. \nThis will be about a three-mile round trip hike to the Coleman Powerhouse and the Coleman Forebay above it. Most of this trip will be walking on a paved service road to these facilities\, part of the walk will be up a fairly steep hill but easy for those in shape. On the way the walk leader will identify some of the early blooming plants as well as trees and shrubs so this outing will be part plant ID and part learning about the important restoration that will be completed. \nThe entire drive and hike will take about 3 hours. Dogs on leashes are okay\, but bring poop bags. SUMMARY:Walk Through Proposed 110-acre Development (Quartz Hill area)
DESCRIPTION:Walk Through Proposed 110-acre Development \nQuartz Hill Area \nSaturday\, November 9\, 9:30 am \nThis walk will be through a natural area west of Quartz Hill Road that was burned by the Carr Fire and the City of Redding\, using HUD money\, plans to put in a 110-acre development of homes. The City will build all of the infrastructure and K2 development will buy the lots individually\, building homes on them and selling them as the market dictates. To get HUD funding\, 51% of the homes must be sold to those making under 80% of the median Redding income. \nThis will be a nature walk with both bird and plant identification and an educational walk as to how the City is planning to develop the property and the methods it will be using. David Ledger will be the walk leader and we will have a birder to help with bird identification. Most of the walk will be on a fairly level gravel road and some will be on rough terrain\, so wear boots and bring water and poles. Rain will cancel but\, drizzle or light rain we will still go just be sure to bring an umbrella. If you don’t want to go into the uneven areas\, you can easily return to your cars on level ground. \nPark at the south end of Spinnaker Drive past Americana Way and near Keel Court. We will walk from there. Please sign up at our Meetup site and sign the waiver here.

SUMMARY:California Rangelands: Measuring Their Environmental Importance
DESCRIPTION:California Rangelands: Measuring Their Environmental Importance \nWednesday\, October 16th\, 6 pm  \nRedding Library Community Room \n\nRangeland Monitoring Network: Measuring Soil\, Plant\, and Wildlife Habitat Health on California Rangelands \nAlicia Herrera\, an ecologist with Point Blue Conservation Science\, will present a talk on Point Blue’s Rangeland Monitoring Network (RMN) which seeks to understand and measure the ecological function of rangelands and work cooperatively with land managers across California. Alicia will present results from RMN monitoring efforts and discuss principles and stewardship of soil\, plant\, and wildlife habitat health on rangelands. \n“Globally rangelands account for 28% of global land cover and contain primarily grasslands shrubland\, and savannah ecosystems\, but also include desert\, wetlands\, and other types of woodland. In California alone rangelands cover approximately 57 million acres with Mediterranean-type grasslands\, shrublands\, and woodlands accounting for 30% of this estimate. Rangelands are typically found in semiarid and arid regions with relatively less productive soils and or on steep terrain where crop production has historically been restricted.” (From Point Blue website.) There is growing evidence that proper livestock grazing management and associated conservation practices\, such as riparian restoration and silvopasture\, can benefit native grasses and flowering vernal pool species\, manage habitat for birds and wildlife\, and maintain or improve soil fertility on rangelands.  \nPoint Blue’s Rangeland Monitoring Network includes over 100 participating ranches across 28 counties in California\, including Shasta. Point Blue’s team of Partner Biologists works with rangeland owners to collect standardized ecological data\, evaluate the effects of grazing and other conservation practices\, and provide information and recommendations to landowners to help guide decisions and enhance the ecological health of rangelands.  \nAlicia lives in Redding and primarily focuses her work within Shasta County. She serves on the board of directors of the Shasta Land Trust\, is an excellent birder\, and is a self-proclaimed plant geek. \nSEA will be providing refreshments and will also give the latest on the Medicine Lake Highlands (Sattitl) National Monument Campaign\, our successful candidates’ forum\, potential cooperation with Project Learning Tree for tree planting at schools involving children\, and the current state of the proposed new tree ordinance. We hope to have someone from the Pit River Tribe give a brief update on Medicine Lake (Sattitla).

SUMMARY:Volunteer Opportunity: Help Revitalize Salmon Habitat
DESCRIPTION:River Partners\, in collaboration with the U.S. Bureau of Land Management\, is restoring 150 acres of floodplain habitat at the confluence of Battle Creek and the Sacramento River\, with the first phase starting in fall 2023. \n  \nYou can volunteer and join in the effort to plant over 30\,000 plants to help this restoration effort! Meet October 11th & 12th from 8:30 am – 2 pm at 3778 Gover Rd.\, Anderson\, Calif. If you come to volunteer\, please wear close-toed shoes and pants\, bring a lunch/water\, and bring work gloves and hand trowels if you have them! Also\, you will need to fill out THIS waiver before you volunteer (this is different from SEA’s waiver)! \n  \nBattle Creek is one of the last streams in California that supports all four runs of Chinook salmon and steelhead. This restoration aims to enhance fish habitat\, reduce fragmentation\, and support the recovery of endangered species like the Swainson’s hawk\, Western yellow-billed cuckoo\, and valley elderberry longhorn beetle. Located on the 306-acre Rancho Breisgau Unit\, the project is vital for connecting a major wildlife corridor extending from the Sacramento River to the headwaters of Battle Creek in Lassen Volcanic National Park. The second phase will restore an additional 156 acres once funding is secured. \n  \nThis area\, once agricultural land now overtaken by invasive species\, offers little wildlife habitat. However\, River Partners’ expertise in restoring riparian forests will transform it into a thriving ecosystem\, closing a critical gap in the riparian corridor along Lower Battle Creek and the Sacramento River.
