SUMMARY:Battle Creek Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:Battle Creek Field Trip \nSaturday\, January 11\, 9:30 am \nSign up for trip: https://forms.gle/Q1Kk77vVCS9P6Jmy6 \nFor this field trip we will head to the Coleman Fish Hatchery and then hike up a paved road to the Coleman hydroelectric Powerhouse and then up a hill to the Coleman Forebay. Walk leader David Ledger will explain some of the restoration work being done and planned dam removals on Battle Creek\, an extremely important habitat for salmon and steelhead trout. Two of the dams are no longer functioning but are still impeding fish passage as are some diversion dams and canals. \nThis will be about a three-mile round trip hike to the Coleman Powerhouse and the Coleman Forebay above it. Most of this trip will be walking on a paved service road to these facilities\, part of the walk will be up a fairly steep hill but easy for those in shape. On the way the walk leader will identify some of the early blooming plants as well as trees and shrubs so this outing will be part plant ID and part learning about the important restoration that will be completed. \nThe entire drive and hike will take about 3 hours. Dogs on leashes are okay\, but bring poop bags. For further information contact david@ecoshasta.org \nSign up at: https://forms.gle/Q1Kk77vVCS9P6Jmy6 \nWhen you sign up\, you will get meet up location information.

SUMMARY:Sloppy Joe Trail Hike (West Redding)
DESCRIPTION:Sloppy Joe Hike (West Redding) \nSunday\, November 17\, 2024 \n9:30am to Noon (approx.) \n  \nCome check out one of Redding’s newest trails with new SEA board member Juliet Malik. We will enter from the Country Heights neighborhood and walk a two-mile loop that goes through both riparian and oak woodland habitats. During this naturalist hike we will identify native plants and keep our eyes and ears open for birds\, bugs\, and other fauna.  The trail is moderately hilly with rocky\, uneven ground so sturdy shoes and good balance are in order. If significant rainfall has occurred\, some shallow creek crossings may be necessary. Bring a snack\, water\, appropriate outerwear\, and binoculars if you want to look for birds. A plant and bird checklist will be provided. \n  \nWe will meet at the end of Sunglow Drive and walk a short distance down Winter Green Court to the trailhead. To join please sign up at our Meetup website and sign the waiver form so we can contact you if there is a cancellation or any other change in plans. Heavy rain cancels. SUMMARY:Walk Through Proposed 110-acre Development (Quartz Hill area)
DESCRIPTION:Walk Through Proposed 110-acre Development \nQuartz Hill Area \nSaturday\, November 9\, 9:30 am \nThis walk will be through a natural area west of Quartz Hill Road that was burned by the Carr Fire and the City of Redding\, using HUD money\, plans to put in a 110-acre development of homes. The City will build all of the infrastructure and K2 development will buy the lots individually\, building homes on them and selling them as the market dictates. To get HUD funding\, 51% of the homes must be sold to those making under 80% of the median Redding income. \nThis will be a nature walk with both bird and plant identification and an educational walk as to how the City is planning to develop the property and the methods it will be using. David Ledger will be the walk leader and we will have a birder to help with bird identification. Most of the walk will be on a fairly level gravel road and some will be on rough terrain\, so wear boots and bring water and poles. Rain will cancel but\, drizzle or light rain we will still go just be sure to bring an umbrella. If you don’t want to go into the uneven areas\, you can easily return to your cars on level ground. \nPark at the south end of Spinnaker Drive past Americana Way and near Keel Court. We will walk from there. Please sign up at our Meetup site and sign the waiver here.

SUMMARY:California Rangelands: Measuring Their Environmental Importance
DESCRIPTION:California Rangelands: Measuring Their Environmental Importance \nWednesday\, October 16th\, 6 pm  \nRedding Library Community Room \n\nRangeland Monitoring Network: Measuring Soil\, Plant\, and Wildlife Habitat Health on California Rangelands \nAlicia Herrera\, an ecologist with Point Blue Conservation Science\, will present a talk on Point Blue’s Rangeland Monitoring Network (RMN) which seeks to understand and measure the ecological function of rangelands and work cooperatively with land managers across California. Alicia will present results from RMN monitoring efforts and discuss principles and stewardship of soil\, plant\, and wildlife habitat health on rangelands. \n“Globally rangelands account for 28% of global land cover and contain primarily grasslands shrubland\, and savannah ecosystems\, but also include desert\, wetlands\, and other types of woodland. In California alone rangelands cover approximately 57 million acres with Mediterranean-type grasslands\, shrublands\, and woodlands accounting for 30% of this estimate. Rangelands are typically found in semiarid and arid regions with relatively less productive soils and or on steep terrain where crop production has historically been restricted.” (From Point Blue website.) There is growing evidence that proper livestock grazing management and associated conservation practices\, such as riparian restoration and silvopasture\, can benefit native grasses and flowering vernal pool species\, manage habitat for birds and wildlife\, and maintain or improve soil fertility on rangelands.  \nPoint Blue’s Rangeland Monitoring Network includes over 100 participating ranches across 28 counties in California\, including Shasta. Point Blue’s team of Partner Biologists works with rangeland owners to collect standardized ecological data\, evaluate the effects of grazing and other conservation practices\, and provide information and recommendations to landowners to help guide decisions and enhance the ecological health of rangelands.  \nAlicia lives in Redding and primarily focuses her work within Shasta County. She serves on the board of directors of the Shasta Land Trust\, is an excellent birder\, and is a self-proclaimed plant geek. \nSEA will be providing refreshments and will also give the latest on the Medicine Lake Highlands (Sattitl) National Monument Campaign\, our successful candidates’ forum\, potential cooperation with Project Learning Tree for tree planting at schools involving children\, and the current state of the proposed new tree ordinance. We hope to have someone from the Pit River Tribe give a brief update on Medicine Lake (Sattitla).

This restoration aims to enhance fish habitat\, reduce fragmentation\, and support the recovery of endangered species like the Swainson’s hawk\, Western yellow-billed cuckoo\, and valley elderberry longhorn beetle. Located on the 306-acre Rancho Breisgau Unit\, the project is vital for connecting a major wildlife corridor extending from the Sacramento River to the headwaters of Battle Creek in Lassen Volcanic National Park. The second phase will restore an additional 156 acres once funding is secured. \n  \nThis area\, once agricultural land now overtaken by invasive species\, offers little wildlife habitat. However\, River Partners’ expertise in restoring riparian forests will transform it into a thriving ecosystem\, closing a critical gap in the riparian corridor along Lower Battle Creek and the Sacramento River.

SUMMARY:Keeping Our River Clean: Redding Storm Drain Facility Tour
DESCRIPTION:RESCHEDULED: \nKeeping Our River Clean: Redding Storm Drain Facility Tour \nTuesday\, October 1\, 2024\, 11:30 am – 12:30 pm. \n20055 Viking Way\, Bldg 3\, Redding \n  \nPart of the mission of Shasta Environmental Alliance (SEA) is to protect the water of the Sacramento River watershed and an important part of that is making sure water and debris going into the river are free of pollution. \n  \nOne important part of protecting the river water is ensuring contaminated water and associated items do not enter the Sacramento River\, which requires public education and the work of the Storm Water Division of Public Works. \n  \nIn a SEA-arranged meeting\, the Storm Water Management division of the City of Redding Public Works Department oversees the vast storm drain system in Redding and will be explaining everything that goes into the storm drain system and new stringent state laws that will be taking effect in 2025 which will help to keep a lot of plastic and other debris out. After explaining this important but often overlooked utility in the city\, staff will present and demonstrate the equipment they use to keep the system operating effectively. \n  \nPreviously\, SEA arranged a tour of the Wastewater Treatment Plant on Clear Creek and the Buckeye Water Treatment Plant processing water from Whiskeytown Lake. At this meeting\, we will learn another important part of what water actually goes into the Sacramento River through storm drains\, how it gets there\, and how we can work to make it cleaner. \n  \nThis will be a brown bag meeting from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm at the City Corp Yard at 20055 Viking Way\, Bldg. 3\, Redding\, on Tuesday\, October 1\, 2024. If you would like to attend this meeting\, please email david@ecoshasta.org or sign up here on here on our meetup site so we know how many to expect.

SUMMARY:RESCHEDULED: Phillips Brothers Mill Tour (paid event - advanced sign up required)
DESCRIPTION:NEW DATE (rescheduled from May 4th cancellation)\nPhillips Brothers Mill Tour\nSaturday\, May 25th at 8 am\nMeet at the Mt. Shasta Mall Parking lot\n$25 per person\n\n\n\nThis will be a field trip to the historic Phillips Brothers Mill\, a steam-powered sawmill and box factory operated off the grid that is on the National Register of Historic Places. The mill operated by the Hendrix Family was assembled from various steam mills in the area and has been a working mill since 1897. They even have a 1906 huge steam-operated tractor\, all located on 1000 acres of forested land that has a conservation easement on it and is only selectively cut. One of the family members will give us a tour of the mill\, the steam-operated boilers that power the plant. Even the family homestead is on solar power. Everything is off the grid including the well.\n\n\n\nThis will be a fascinating tour from the mill pond through the first cuts of the logs\, to the finished products\, either custom-cut wood or wooden boxes. With enough time we will stop on the way back to look at some trees infected with bark beetles that will soon be cut for lumber. Due to safety concerns\, the mill will not be operating during the tour.\n\n\n\nYou must sign up on our Meetup site (https://www.meetup.com/shasta…/events/300174252/) and sign a waiver unless you already have for 2024. Children must be over 12 years old\, and a parent must sign a waiver for them. This tour is limited to 24 people and costs $25 per person.\n\n\n\nFor more information contact david@ecoshasta.org. We will meet at the Mt. Shasta Mall near Chase Bank and carpool and caravan to the mill. Make sure you pre-register!

SUMMARY:Historic Horsetown Photo (Horsetown-Clear Creek Preserve)
DESCRIPTION:May 18 (Sat.) 10:00 A.M. – “HISTORIC HORSETOWN PHOTO” \n“In 1849\, a group of hopeful prospectors arrived at the site of Reading’s Bar on Clear Creek\, and by 1850 the census identified 1\,000 inhabitants of what became One Horse Town (Horsetown). For many years HCCP has hoped to locate an historical photograph of the town – we even advertised a reward if someone could find one! \nAnd now we have one\, thanks to Joe Molter with the assistance of Trudy Vaughan and Shasta Historical Society. Trudy will expand on Cathy Scott’s earlier talk this Spring on the history of the area and also discuss some historic archaeological work conducted here at HCCP; and Joe will tell the story of the discovery of this photo\, have copies of the photo\, and lead a short gentle walk to its original site to orient you to today’s landscape. Meet at the HCCP Amphitheatre at 10am. \nSee our website at HorsetownClearCreekPreserve.org for a trail map and coming events. Contact Horsetownhccp@gmail.com for more information”

SUMMARY:Hornbeck Trail Walk with BLM Ecologist
DESCRIPTION:Hornbeck Trail Walk with BLM Ecologist\nSaturday\, May 11th\, 2024 at 9am \nSEA has organized a field trip to be led by BLM Ecologist Brooke Thompson on the Hornbeck Trail north of Redding to talk about the proposed fire treatment planned for the area. Brooke will explain the ecology of the area\, how it has been affected by fire suppression\, and alternatives in preserving the area and making it safer from catastrophic fire. The vegetation was also adversely affected by pollutants from the copper smelters that were operating in the late 1800s and early 20th century near where Shasta Dam is now located. \nWe will also identify native plants and non-native plants on this field trip. Brooke also wants to hear input from you\, the public\, about their alternatives. This trail is in a mixed oak woodland and chaparral habitat. \nBrooke has led several field trips for SEA before and has a passion for the natural world and always leads an informative walk. This will be a fairly easy walk of 2 to 3 miles and will take about 2 hours. Meet at the trailhead which is under the powerlines on Quartz Hill Road between Lake Blvd. and Keswick Dam Road. Please sign up on our Meetup page and sign the waiver if you haven’t already. \nFor more information contact David Ledger at david@ecoshasta.org. For those wishing\, after the field trip we will take a short drive to the Quartz Hill Mine.

SUMMARY:Lillian Nelson Nature Preserve Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:Lillian Nelson Nature Preserve Field Trip \nFriday\, May 10th at 8:30am \nRead directions below for meetup location! \n  \nPlease join us for a visit to Lillian Nelson Nature Preserve\, a privately owned 30-acre conservation easement managed by Shasta Land Trust. The Western Shasta RCD in partnership with Point Blue Conservation Science is currently implementing grant-funded restoration work. \n  \nProjects include invasive red sesbania removal from Boulder creek\, a small meadow restoration\, forest health and fuel reduction\, acorn planting\, brush pile habitat piles\, bird box installation and outdoor classroom maintenance. There will also be an opportunity to see beaver activity! \n  \nThe meeting place is on College View just below the hill going up to Bethel Church. We will have a cone that says “SEA” on it to make it clear where to turn! The property borders Bethel on the East. There is a Bethel gravel parking lot and a yellow COR easement gate for the meeting place. Parking is allowed in the Bethel gravel parking lot. The road is bumpy and rutted so vehicle clearance could be an issue. It is a short walk from the Bethel parking lot. There is no address for that location. Carpooling is recommended. The Hearth on Churn creek is the nearest familiar easily located business if a more simple meeting place is required. \n  \nPlease sign up on our Meetup site and fill out a 2024 liability waiver if you’ve not done so already!
